Marion Crane(Janet Leigh), Arizona'da bir emlak ofisinde
çalışmaktadır.Sevgilisi Sam(John Gavin) ile evlenmek istemektedir ancak
çiftin çok az parası vardır. Bir cuma günü, patronu Marion'a bankaya
para yatırması için 40 bin dolar verir.Marion, bu parayla Sam'le hayal
ettikleri hayatı kurabileceklerine karar verir ve parayı çalarak Sam'le
buluşmaya gider. Yolda Bates Motel'de konaklamak zorunda kalır. Moteli
işleten Norman Bates(Anthony Perkins), annesiyle saplantısı olan genç
bir adamdır.Beraber akşam yemeği yerler ve Marion odasına çekilir ve
yatmadan önce duş almaya karar verir. Sinerma tarihinde adından ünlü
"duş sahnesiyle" söz ettiren, türünün en önemli örneklerinden Sapık,
Alfred Hitchcock'un başyapıtlarından biri olarak kabul edilir.

Seeing the opportunity to take the money and start a new life, Marion leaves town and heads towards Sam's California store. Tired after the long drive and caught in a storm, she gets off the main highway and pulls into The Bates Motel. The motel is managed by a quiet young man called Norman who seems to be dominated by his mother.
